Artist Statement & Bio
"Even with all our technology and the inventions that make modern life so much easier than it once was, it takes just one big natural disaster to wipe all that away and remind us that, here on Earth, we‘re still at the mercy of nature."
~ Neil deGrasse Tyson
A female artist born and raised in tornado alley of rural central Oklahoma has shaped Martin's ideas of the earth and permanence. Martin's work explores natural force and opens discussion of beauty from catastrophic events. Simultaneously, she looks inward as to how this information has been absorbed and reflected in her life. Martin believes that after experiencing a traumatic event such as a tornado encounter, the feelings associated with that event remain connected to and become part of the individual. Although she has a deep respect and fear for these natural phenomena, she deeply admires their beauty and sheer strength. Her work examines these conflicting feelings and the terrible beauty that surrounds natural disasters.
Martin earned her MFA in sculpture from the University of New Mexico and her BFA in sculpture and BS in design, housing and merchandising from Oklahoma State University. In 2016, she created a sculpture in collaboration with Oklahomans in all 77 counties. This piece, "Weathering Oklahoma," is displayed at the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
